The iconic black-and-white check still turns heads, but 2025 is all about colour. Earthy combinations like terracotta and cream are gaining traction, while daring duos like navy and mustard are stealing the spotlight. Want to stand out? Go for muted pastels or tone-on-tone neutrals to create a soft, designer look.
Checkerboard tiles work beautifully in just about any space. In bathrooms, they add a pop of pattern without overwhelming the room. In kitchens, they create visual interest underfoot and pair effortlessly with both modern and heritage cabinetry. And for entryways? Instant impact the moment you walk in.
Designers and renovators alike are stepping outside the box with how they lay checkerboard tiles. Think diagonal patterns, oversized tiles, and even mixing materials like marble, porcelain, or terrazzo to add texture and depth. It’s checkerboard—but not as you know it.
There’s something undeniably nostalgic about checkerboard flooring—it harks back to Art Deco glamour and 1950s diners. But today’s versions are all about blending old-school vibes with contemporary elegance. It’s this mix that makes them so popular in 2025 interiors.
